Fainting Goat Facts

The fainting goat is a breed of domestic goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) that stiffens when startled. Although the goat may fall over and appear to faint, it remains fully conscious in a state of myotonia. Since it doesnt actually faint, the animal is properly known as the myotonic goat. Fainting goats have a hereditary disorder called myotonia congenita. Although the goat freezes when panicked, it suffers no harm and leads a normal, healthy life. Fast Facts: Fainting Goat Scientific Name: Capra aegagrus hircusCommon Names: Fainting goat, myotonic goat, falling goat, Tennessee goat, stiff-legged goatBasic Animal Group: MammalSize: 17-25 inches tallWeight: 60-174 poundsLifespan: 15-18 yearsDiet: HerbivoreHabitat: Originally from Tennessee, USAPopulation: 10,000Conservation Status: Not Evaluated Description Fainting goats are a breed of small meat goats (heavily muscled). A typical adult ranges from 17 to 25 inches tall and weighs between 60 and 174 pounds. The breed has distinctive prominent eyes set in high sockets. While the most common fainting goat coat color is black and white, the breed occurs in most color combinations. Either long or short hair is possible, but there is no angora strain of fainting goat. Fainting goats come in a variety of colors and coat lengths. passion4nature / Getty Images Why Fainting Goats Faint All fainting goats have an inherited muscle condition called myotonia congenita or Thomsens disease. The disorder is caused by a missense mutation of the CLCN1 gene that reduces chloride ion conductance in the chloride channels of muscle fibers. When the animal is startled its muscles tense up and dont immediately relax, causing the goat to fall down. Specifically, startling the goat causes its eyes and ears to send an electrical signal to the brain initiating the fight or flight response. When the response is initiated, the brain determines whether to stay or flee and the voluntary muscles momentarily tense. In myotonic goats, the balance between positively charged sodium ions and negatively charged chloride ions is out of balance, so muscles have enough sodium to relax, but not enough chloride. It can take 5 to 20 seconds for the ion balance to resolve and the muscles to relax. The severity of the condition varies according to individual, age, water availability, and taurine supplementation. Younger goats stiffen and fall more often than older goats, in part because mature individuals have adapted to the condition and are less easily startled. Based on understanding of myotonia congenita in humans, its known that the condition is painless and has no effect on the individuals muscle tone, consciousness, or life expectancy. Young kids are more susceptible to fainting than older adults. Redleg / Wikimedia Commons Habitat and Distribution Fainting goats were brought to Marshall County, Tennessee, in the 1880s. Today, they are kept throughout the world, although they remain most numerous in the United States. Diet and Behavior Like other goats, fainting goats are herbivores that feed on vines, shrubs, trees, and some broad leaf plants. While goats taste most objects to gain information about them, they dont actually eat everything. Nightshade plants and moldy feed may be deadly to fainting goats. Like other goats, this breed is naturally inquisitive. They are intelligent and can solve simple puzzles. Goat are social animals, but they will form herds with animals of other species, such as sheep, and can form close bonds with humans. Reproduction and Offspring Goats reach sexual maturity between the ages of 3 and 15 months, ideally when they have reached 70% of their adult weight. Females (does) come into estrus every 21 days and indicate willingness to mate by vigorous tail wagging. Males (bucks) curl their upper lips (flehmen response) and urinate on their forelegs and face to increase their odor. Gestation lasts around 150 days, usually resulting in twin births. Does start milk production when they give birth or kid. Domestic goats typically live 15 to 18 years. Conservation Status Because fainting goats are domestic, the IUCN has not evaluated the breed to assign a conservation status. However, the Livestock Conservancy lists it as threatened. According to the International Fainting Goat Association, there are around 10,000 fainting goats in the world. Fainting Goats and Humans Because of their rarity, fainting goats typically arent raised for meat. The animals are usually kept as pets or show animals. Fainting goats are easier to care for than most other breeds because they are smaller, have a friendly disposition, and dont jump fences over 1.6 feet (0.5 meters) high. Sources Beck, C. Analysis Of Strangers Within - 940 Words

The word ‘xenophobia’ has originated from the Greek terms ‘xenos’ means foreign and ‘phobos’ means fear, which basically means a fear of foreign, foreigners . According to the Webster’s Dictionary the term is described as, â€Å"the fear and hatred of strangers and foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign†. Contact with foreigners from outside and strangers within has accelerated with the advent of the modern age, and also a substantial composition developed in Europe addresses this realism. In case of ‘strangers within’, the most typical example was the Jews on mainly Christian continent. From an early point in era, scholarly people were splitted between those who promoted tolerance and those who clinged to anti-Semitic views. Anti-Semitism had old and deep roots in Catholicism, and for that reason there was a marvelous constancy between Protestantism and Catholicism. Furthermore, many experts consider Luther s unseemly rule against the Jews, after it became obvious that they did not agree to convert to Christianity. The Jews he hated were forced to live in separate part of a city especially a slum areas, which concludes that they were physically close but socially remote. Stated that the jewish religion constitutes the formative roots of Christianity, it would definitel y be logical to make an assumption that they would not be distinguished as the stranger within, but apparently this was the prime feeling and thoughts among both intellectuals and ordinaryShow MoreRelatedGeorge Simmel s The Stranger 992 Words   |  4 Pages George Simmel’s, ‘The Stranger’ and W.E.B. Physician Assisted Suicide Should Be Legal - 2366 Words

Physician-assisted suicide is an extremely controversial issue. Physician-assisted suicide is when a physician assists a terminally ill patient in ending their life by providing the patient with both the information and medicine necessary for them to carry out the task themselves (Ebrahimi 2012). On October 27, 1997 Oregon passed the Death with Dignity Law, permitting terminally ill state residents to end their lives by giving themselves a lethal dose of medicine prescribed by their doctor (Oregon.gov). There are people who believe that the Death with Dignity Law should be implemented across the nation because it gives people who are already dying from a disease a chance to end their life with dignity, while others believe that doctors†¦show more content†¦Their personal beliefs should not be forced onto those who are terminally ill. Their personal views and beliefs should not be a factor in the decision these people choose to make. Doctor Hunnell discusses how medical journ als are beginning to support physician-assisted suicide to a greater degree (2012). While there are many doctors who are in favor of physician-assisted suicide, there are still those who believe it goes against a doctor’s ethical duty. The Death with Dignity Act, which was accepted by Oregon in 1977 has allowed 1,173 people to receive prescriptions and 752 people have used them to die from physician assistance (Egan 2015). These numbers are very important to consider. Allowing people to simply have the option to use the medicine to end their life, having it at their dispense, gives the patients the feeling that they have some control, and aren’t so helpless. These patients often feel like they have no control over their life anymore. The sickness is slowly killing them, and the option of physician-assisted suicide allows them to have control of one significant part of their life. Physician-assisted suicide appears to be the best form of euthanasia. When passive euthana sia is used, the patient may suffer for days before their body shuts down, which defeats the purpose of a pain free death. With active euthanasia, the doctor is essentially responsible for killing the patient, which is not necessarily morally correct.

Confrontation Free Essays

Confrontation Life can be hard sometimes when it comes to dealing with other people’s thoughts and feelings. Most people â€Å"walk on eggshells† around others Just to make sure no feelings are hurt. But, in the long run we are only hurting each other by not opening up and discussing the situation and a solution. We will write a custom essay sample on Confrontation or any similar topic only for you Order Now To be open and truthful to anyone or any situation is a good trait characteristic for any person to have in life. My first person that I knew was my number one to confront is a boy by the name of Colon, also known as my ex-fiance. We were dating for about 3 years and engaged for a year until about in the end of December 2013 1 realized that I did not want to marry him or anybody for that matter. I honestly deep down never wanted to marry him and still cannot tell you why it ended up lasting that long. I wouldn’t say that it was a bad breakup either. He understood and was accepting, I thought. Until, on my first date with someone else he stalked me and followed us around. After that point on he became obsessive at belittling and slandering my name all over social media sites. I asked Colon if we could maybe meet up for coffee one afternoon, to which he easily agreed. Upon meeting him, I felt no awkwardness or feelings whatsoever. After the standard small talk I got down to business. I used my I-statement, saying, â€Å"Colon, I feel a little hurt and almost betrayed because on the one hand you said that there were no hard feelings and you understood why we couldn’t be together. You seemed to want to be friends still and were acting very cool. Then on the other hand I saw that you were posting some very rude and untrue things about me on faceable and Witter. Why is that? † Colon kind of nodded and stated that he was the one who felt betrayed on how quickly I moved on with other men (which I regretfully told him). He also said how he felt that our relationship meant more to him than me, that is why it affected him and I was an â€Å"emotionless robot†. Which I can agree on were all true statements. He said that twitter and faceable were like his personal diary where he can vent all of his feelings. I did apologize on that I did move on very quickly but I couldn’t help to feeling nothing for him so what was the point to sulk around? He seemed to be doing pretty fine though which he agreed saying there is nothing left to hold on to so what’s the point? I politely asked Colon if he would stop saying such things about me on these sites where everyone can see it. That to some people who saw and believe in such nonsense would look at me different. He agreed and apologized saying that he did regret putting most of the comments on there and that it was childish. After that we talked like normal about how life was going and what we have been up to. I have not yet seen any other comments about me! It was tough to Indo a second person to confront because I didn’t feel the need to talk to anybody about anything that was bothering me. There was one random person that I could think of that has recently come into my life. I work at Mckay Dee Hospital as a phlebotomy’s and there is a very cute nurse there named Ryan. We have been talking lately, hanging out, and going on dates. Well, then a coworker told me a little rumor that Ryan happened to be married. I realized then that yes, that is something that really needs to have a confrontation. One day Ryan and I hung out and went for a elk around the local duck pond. We were actually discussing this paper and how I need to find someone else to confront. â€Å"Confront me! † he exclaimed. â€Å"Alright, I am a little worried because I feel like you are not being completely honest with me. You act very flirtatious to me and yet I heard that you happen to actually be married. † Ryan paused for about a second and Just replied with a miss, I am. † I asked if he was happily married then which he replied with a no. We then discussed to why he was in such an unhappy marriage which sounded like result from getting married too young. It did feel really good to get that off of my chest and find out the real reasons as to why he was talking to me and know that he wasn’t a cold-hearted son of a pitch. Even though it is not completely innocent situation I know that there are reasons why he is doing this, which made me feel a little better. For the third person we had to choose somebody from our group. I couldn’t Just pick one person. I felt like I needed a whole group discussion for this. Now, I am not saying that groups don’t ever have problems. I feel as though our group does not give an astonishing effort for much at all. We all come to class and then go about our busy lives. That is why we don’t have to many problems because none of us seem to care. I told our group that I feel we all are pretty busy, which is a shame, that we never get together and discuss topics of class. I feel as if we come to class, say a couple of words to each other, say our goodbyes when class is done, then repeat until next class time. They all seemed to agree that maybe it’s time to start getting together especially since our group project and final group paper will be coming up shortly. Since then we have done our group revere project which I can honestly say was the most fun I have had in a little while. Our group became very close that day as we all Joked around and got to know one another. There are many tools for communication. Many people don’t even know they use in their daily life. These tools help many to understand each other in an effective way. Some of these tools include perception checking, which is the process of clarifying a nonverbal cue that was received by stating what behavior was observed, giving interpretations and asking the message sender for clarification of nonverbal u. I see this one as a very major useful tool in communication. More people need to learn that this tool can help all different kind of situations. Most rash and not to smart decision are based upon not understanding non-verbal cues or taking them in the wrong way. People Judge others based off non-verbal behaviors, but don’t take the time to look into what they are really thinking. I didn’t have to use much perception checking on Colon because all of his cues were not non-verbal, but actual thoughts posted all over the internet. That made it easy to know how he really felt, which I had to directly confront. Another communication tool is self-disclosure, which is the act of revealing more about oneself to others which includes thoughts, feelings, goals, fears, and dreams. This one is also very important for growing healthy relationship. To really show somebody you care use self-disclosure. This opens up oneself to others so they can get to know the real you and become much closer in similarities. Whether truthfulness is a good trait or not, it is easier said then done. Most, like me, have fear of confrontation because of the thought of something said to e taken wrong or offend someone. But, I have learned that if you approach it in a certain way (especially with I-statements) and have a positive caring attitude, it eases the tension of any situation. I have realized that talking and being open to people solves more problems than cause any. I can honestly say that I feel a lot better and it has improved my life to have discuss these issue with these people. I have never been one of self-disclosure but, my ways are starting to change in light of this new concept, which I believe is going to be one of the most important tools I can have in life. Memory Essay Thesis Example For Students

Memory Essay Thesis Question 4: There are many techniques which have been developed to increase the efficiency of memory . Select 3 techniques , discuss them in detail and present examples of when they can be used.In the world today it is a must to be able to remember things. Memory is a big part in everyones life. Their is hardly a day that goes by when you do not have to remember something. If someone doesnt have a great memory it could cause somewhat of a down fall in their professional life. In this paper I will discuss three different memorization habits and how they can be contributed to ones everyday lifestyle. One of many ways that help people memorize things is in a verbal sense called Rhymes. Rhyming is an easy way for someone to memorize certain things. This method is most common with children in school. Many people that grow up still remember these little detailed Rhymes that help them get threw school. Rhymes are nothing other than little sayings which sometimes make no sense , but when repeated in your mind it helps your recall what is need to know . The Rhyme that I remember best was used in math class ? I ate and ate until I was sick on the floor eight times eight equals sixty-four ? that saying is really kind of ridiculous , but I always new what eight times eight was . There are so many sayings out there and everyone of them will help anyone memorize. Rhymes have been and always will have a big impact on helping people in memorization. Another strategy to help on to memorize things is called Acrostics. Acrostics is nothing more than a saying in which the first letter of each word of the saying is the cue to help recall information you need to know . This method is very similar to the method of Rhyming , but you only use the one letter from each word to represent the cue for your needed information. One of the Acrostic phrases that many people were taught for learning notes in music class was ? Every good boy does fine ? . This saying helps people remember notes E, G, B, D, and F , which are five main chords, in order , used in music. Acrostic is not used as much as Rhyme; however, though they are very similar in style. Many people use this method , but really have no idea what it is called nor really care as long as it works , and it does . All people tend to do things the easy way , and their is nothing wrong with that as long as it works . There are certain methods for everything and it always helps to have some help when needed. The third method that will be discussed is the method of Loci. The method of Loci involves taking an imaginary walk along a familiar path where images of items to be remembered are associated with certain locations . The first step is to commit to memory a series of loci, or places along a path. Usually these loci are specific locations in your home or neighborhood. Then envision each thing you want to remember in one of these locations. Try to form vivid images . When you need to remember the things , imagine yourself on your path , which should serve as cues for the retrieval of the images you have formed ( Wayne Weiten, 2000 ). The usefulness of Loci helps assure yourself of remembering items in a certain order and the order is determined by the location sequence along the certain path. In this paper I have discussed and gave examples for three different ways to improve ones memory. There are many other methods in to help with memorization ;however , I believe these are the three most common used help methods. Each method has its own direct way in helping one to memorize something for long periods of time. .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 , .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .postImageUrl , .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 , .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035:hover , .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035:visited , .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035:active { border:0!important; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035:active , .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035 .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8e63e9b77d03bae43b2fdc898a30d035:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Sun and The Moon script Essay Memorizing is a everyday thing that is nearly necessary for everyday life. People have methods for doing everything and just because you do something one way doesnt make that the only right way. Most methods are not tought ,some are just distinguish to what is available. No one can remember everything , but with a little help it makes it somewhat easier to try. Some methods are learned from experience . Experience helps the person know what they are doing and then one can do the same task in a certain way which is easier to them . Everyone forgets things every now and again no matter who you are. People usually forget things when something else is on there mind , but their is something for everything to help us memorize what it is we need to do.
