Cowboy Conservatism Free Essays

In Cowboy Conservatism, we get to take a look at the rise of conservatism in Texas and the many events that led to the shift from Democratic Texas to a more right wing centered Texas. The events in the book including the election of LBJ, the assassination of Kennedy, and the election of Ronald Reagan, are some of the major events that helped shape Texas into what it is today. For a century after Reconstruction, the Democratic Party enjoyed electoral dominance on all levels of state government and in the Lone Star State’s representation in the national government. We will write a custom essay sample on Cowboy Conservatism or any similar topic only for you Order Now Democrats held a lock on state politics and government throughout the first half of the twentieth century. But beneath the surface the party’s dominance was crumbling. Political change in Texas and the nation eroded the conditions that fostered Democratic dominance. The 1964 election was one of the most interesting presidential elections in the history of U. S. A. For the first time since the election of 1932, American voters were given a chance to choose a President from two candidates who were completely opposite in their ideology and personality.Incumbent candidates usually get good coverage if they are running for re-election in a time when the economy is good, and this time was no exception. Part of the good coverage President Johnson received can be explained by the good economy and the lingering sympathy the press and the people still felt for the passing of President Kennedy. It also helped that he faced a very weak candidate that came from a divided party. From the start, Senator Goldwater had a difficult task in trying to oust a popular President in a good economy: What made his task almost impossible was that his extreme right wing ideology alienated the more moderate wing of the party. As we can learn from history, a divided party usually loses an election because a portion of their supporters would choose to stay home rather than vote for the candidate they do not like. Senator Goldwater’s refusal to moderate his view alienated the moderate Republicans.Although many Texans supported Goldwaters views on issues, it was hard for most Texans to go against one of their own in Johnson. Johnson made sure that people thought of Goldwater as an extremist in his vie ws, which actually worked very well. I think the election of Ronald Reagan was the defining moment for the change to conservatism not only for Texas but for the rest of the nation. Although Reagan was defeated in 1976, he stuck with his strong conservative principles that most Texans also agreed with.I think most Texans really was on the side of Reagan because he was strong in his beliefs but he wasn’t as threatening as Goldwater. As unemployment and inflation began to rise during the Carter administration, many Americans were looking at alternative views, and Reagan used this to his advantage to run against everything Carter and the Democrats were doing. The genius of Reagan was to unite several different conservative schools of thought and forge them into a political movement.Nevertheless, Ronald Reagan saw something essential to the American cause in each strand of conservatism. He was attracted to the ideas that animated them. Reagan’s great achievement was carried out in the political arena: he pulled together those who were inspired by classical conservatism and those who were inspired by classical liberalism. The victory in Texas was really one of the major influences for the spread of conservatism throughout the United States.Even today, there has been a rise of people who say they want to get back to Reagan conservatism, especially with the economy and unemployment low and mirroring much of the era during the Jimmy Carter presidency. I think what happened with the rise of Reagan is very interesting because we are starting to see much of the same thing again today. There is a strong interest nationally to move back to more conservative principles economically and cut government spending and control. The election of Ronald Reagan, in my opinion, was the definitive turning point in the rise of conservatism in Texas and throughout the United States. How to cite Cowboy Conservatism, Papers

Femme Fatale Essay Example For Students

Femme Fatale Essay There is a strong comparison between the innocence of a virginal child that can bring any man to love her and in his dreams he sees all the men that she has dangerously lured to their deaths on the side of the mountain, and once he awakes he finds that he has been treated the same way; left to die by the Femme Fatale. This lady, who is mentioned in many of Keatss poems who is known as the Femme Fatale, links to Fanny Brawne. She could be so innocent but yet distract Keats away from his writing and so he did not want to be stupid fall for her ways of meaningless seduction, even though he had fallen in love with her. Imagery of nature is a typical idea to write about by Romantic poets. They believed that God is in everything and is contained in his creations. This is also known as Pantheism, which means all God. Keats shows extremely relevant examples of natural imagery and enjambment in To Autumn:  With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;  To bend with apples the mossd cottage-trees. The use of enjambment has made it easier to imagine the vines growing so much that the apples that are being produced are leaning over, as the description is into the next line. With all the explicit imagery Keats has given to the reader it is easy to see why Keats was named a romantic poet. In the second stanza Keats has used alliteration to help the reader feel the wind in the autumn:  Thy hair soft-lifted by the willowing wind;  It is not only visual imagery that Keats is trying to give to the reader but also a sense of movement through Autumn as he uses time scales between each stanza and a carefully placed stasis as the girl falls asleep in the granary: on a half-reapd furrow sound asleep,  It breaks up the poem to show effect of the vivid descriptions that the reader has just read and prepares them for the beginning of another nature filled stanza:  And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;  Once the lambs were newly born in spring and now in autumn the lambs are not quite fully adults but between those two ages, as autumn is the almost forgotten season as that age is. Sound imagery is used by Keats to bring more life into his writing. Autumn is seen as female by Keats and uses it in his poem. Keats relates the fact that he is slowly dying to the last days of autumn as they slowly die themselves:  Ã‚  Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.  The whole poem could be relevant to his own life where he his life has been filled to the brim with happiness and cannot be overloaded any more as in the end of Summer, but it slowly all turns and gets colder and darker, just as his life would have.  The growth of Romanticism led some writers such as Keats to embrace a fascination with Gothic forms that emphasized the supposedly bizarre and grotesque aspects of the Middle Ages. The words I felt before I thought was the basis of these radical Romantic Poets. They didnt want to think logically about life and the way they wrote but from the heart. An example of this in one of Keatss poems, The Eve of St Agnes, is when Angela, the elderly servant lady, chose to let Porphyro see Madeline even though she knew that he could be killed if he stayed in the castle:  Mercy, Porphyro! hie thee from this place;  They are all here to-night, the whole blood-thirsty race!  Angela has a heart and chose to follow her feelings instead of using her brain and making Porphyro leave or be killed. .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f , .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .postImageUrl , .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f , .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f:hover , .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f:visited , .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f:active { border:0!important; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f:active , .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc76bcab6fa079d9565cc23ba8db7ca3f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: How does Shakespeare use Mercutio in act 3 scene 1? EssayKeatss use of vivid description for the reader follows the use of Rousseaus words. Keats poems are typical of a wide range of contrasts to show the true extent of the two factors used in the contrast. Natural imagery is a very important part of the poems and without it Keats would not be a Romantic poet. The natural descriptions do not only show nature but they also illustrate life and ways of living. The natural descriptions used by Keats wanted to break away from the Augustan Satirists that wrote in an intellectual manner, which the Romantic poets disapproved of and so wrote in a free-style manner. Romantic poets w ere republic due to they saw people as freed spirits. Keats has used the same qualities of contrasts, great use of nature and the Gothic style of writing, which follows the same manners as other Romantic poets.

U.S. Gaap vs. Ifrs on Depreciation Sample Essay Example For Students

U.S. Gaap vs. Ifrs on Depreciation Sample Essay By and large. U. S GAAP and IFRS both position depreciation as allotment of cost over an asset’s life. There are three stairss of the depreciation procedure: foremost find depreciable base of the plus. and so gauge asset’s utile life and last take a method of cost allotment that best lucifers gross flow from the plus. Depreciation methods allowed under U. S. GAAP include straight-line. units of production. or accelerated methods ( amount of figures or worsening balance ) . Component depreciation is allowed but non normally used. On the other manus. IFRS allows straight-line. units of production. and both accelerated methods. Component depreciation is required when plus constituents have different benefit forms. Thus the impact of major differences consequences that assets with different constituents will hold different depreciation agendas. which may increase or diminish assets and gross. Under both GAAP and IFRS. alterations in depreciation method and alterations in ut ile life are treated in the current and future periods. in other words- non retrospectively. Under IFRS. estimations of utile life and residuary value. and the method of depreciation. are reviewed at least at each one-year coverage day of the month. We will write a custom essay on U.S. Gaap vs. Ifrs on Depreciation Sample specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now For a company presently utilizing GAAP a alteration to IFRS could ensue in a greater frequence of alterations in deprecation rate which in bend could intend less predictable depreciation disbursal. IFRS allows a company to take between two different theoretical accounts in order to value PP A ; E after it has been recognized on the books: the historical cost theoretical account and the reappraisal theoretical account. Cost theoretical account is like GAAP where PP A ; E is carried at its cost less any accrued depreciation and any accrued damage losingss. Revaluation theoretical account allows a company to appreciate PP A ; E on its books to fair value if just value can be faithfully measured. However. GAAP does non allow reappraisals of PP A ; E or mineral resources. Therefore for a company presently utilizing GAAP a alteration to IFRS and the usage of the reappraisal theoretical account could take to a significant addition in plus values on the balance sheet every bit good as a corresponding significant addition in depreciation disbursal. For illustration. at the beginning of the twelvemonth a company has a edifice with a transporting value of $ 100. 000 and a staying utile life of 10 old ages that was late valued at $ 300. 000. Under GAAP. depreciation disbursal for the twelvemonth would be $ 10. 000 ( presuming straight-line ) . While under IFRS. depreciation disbursal for the twelvemonth could be either $ 30. 000 or $ 10. 000. Mention: Current Major Differences between IFRS and US GAAPhypertext transfer protocol: //post. How to Make Biodiesel From Algae

How to Make Biodiesel From Algae Algae is easy to produce and requires less land to do so than many other plant sources commonly used in the making of fuels, making it an attractive candidate for full-scale biodiesel production. In addition, with a composition containing about half lipid oils, algae appear to be a rich resource as a biofuel feedstock. How to Extract Oil From Algae Not surprisingly, there are numerous ways to remove the lipids, or oils, from the walls of algae cells. But you may be surprised to learn that none of them are particularly earth-shaking methods. For example, ever hear of an olive press? One of the ways for extracting oil from algae works very much like the technique used in an oil press. This is the simplest and most common method for extracting oil from algae and yields about 75 percent of the total available oil from the algae plant. Another common method is the hexane solvent method. When combined with the oil press method, this step can yield up to 95 percent of available oil from algae. It utilizes a two-step process. The first is to utilize the oil press method. Then, instead of stopping there, the leftover algae is mixed with hexane, filtered and cleaned to remove all traces of the chemical in the oil. Used less frequently, the supercritical fluid method can extract up to 100 percent of available oil from the algae. Carbon dioxide is pressurized and heated to change its composition into both a liquid as well as a gas. It is then mixed with the algae, which turns the algae completely into oil. Although it can yield 100 percent of available oil, the plentiful supply of algae as well as the additional equipment and work required, make this one of the least popular options. More diversified than the extraction processes are the methods used for growing the algae so that it will yield the most oil. Growing Algae for the Production of Biodiesel Unlike extraction methods, which are practically universal, growing algae for biodiesel varies greatly in process and method used. While it is possible to identify three primary ways to grow algae, biodiesel manufacturers have worked hard to tweak these processes and make them their own in the quest for perfecting the algae growing process. Open-Pond Growing One of the easiest processes to understand is known as open-pond growing. This is also the most natural way to grow algae for the purpose of biodiesel production. Just as its name would imply, in this method, algae are grown on open ponds, particularly in very warm and sunny parts of the globe, with the hope of maximizing production. This is the simplest form of production, but not surprisingly, it also has some serious drawbacks. In order to truly maximize algae production using this method, water temperature needs to be controlled which can prove very difficult. In addition, this method is more dependent on weather than others, another variable that is impossible to control. Vertical Growth Another method for growing algae is a vertical growth or closed loop production system. This process actually came about as biofuel companies sought to produce algae quicker and more efficiently than what was possible utilizing open pond growth. Vertical growing places algae in clear, plastic bags which allows them to be exposed to sunlight on more than just one side. These bags are stacked high and protected from the elements with a cover. While that extra sun may seem trivial, in reality, the clear plastic bag provides just enough exposure to sunlight to increase the rate of the algae production. Obviously, the greater the algae production, the greater the potential amount of oil that will later be extracted. And unlike the open pond method where algae is exposed to contamination, the vertical growth method isolates algae from this concern. Closed-Tank Bioreactor Plants A third method of extraction that biodiesel companies are continuing to perfect is the construction of algae closed-tank bioreactor plants to further increase already-high oil production. In this method, algae isnt grown outside. Instead, indoor plants are built with large, round drums that are able to grow algae under near perfect conditions. Within these barrels, the algae can be manipulated into growing at maximum levelseven to the point they can be harvested every day. This method, understandably, results in a very high output of algae and oil for biodiesel. Some companies are locating their closed bioreactor plants near energy plants so that extra carbon dioxide can actually be recycled rather than polluting the air. Biodiesel manufacturers continue to hone the closed container and closed-pond processes, with some developing a variation known as fermentation. In this method, algae is cultivated in closed containers where it is fed sugar to spur growth. Following this process is attractive to growers since it provides complete control over an environment. A lesser advantage is that this method is not reliant upon weather or similar climatic conditions to be viable. However, this process has researchers considering sustainable methods for obtaining enough sugar to maximize algae production.

What arguments can be given for and against the desirability of the Essay

What arguments can be given for and against the desirability of the existence of interest groups or (as Madison called them) factions in a democracy Which position do you think is correct - Essay Example The desirability of the existence of interest groups is quite high in the United States of America, because due to their existence, the civilians or the public are able to communicate their issues and concerns to those who are in various positions in the government. There are various interest groups in the US, and the civilians can find one according to their concerns at any point in time. One of the main purposes of any interest group is to influence policy-makers and the way American public system is shaped; interest groups have enough say in the policy-making process. Interest groups have been really effective mainly due to the power imbalance of the parties that are in the government; this imbalance has been created due to difference in power structure of the two branches of the US government. The desirability of interest groups has increased because of several reasons. The same government decisions may be hurtful for one group or community and fruitful for others; thus, those hurt by government policies use interest groups to lobby to make these policies more favourable for them. Sometimes, when a political party representing one side of population is elected, it may be prone to work for the interest of that particular side, so other sides feel neglected; therefore, such people create interest groups to make sure that their interests are not harmed. As an individual, one might not have the power, resources and voice to influence public policies; therefore, interest groups are seen as a means to achieve power and resources for certain individuals who want to safeguard their interests. Several interest groups are in existence in the US, and they are there for different purposes. Another important function of interest groups is to ensure that the members of the government do not devise policies for their own interests and attach equal importance to different individuals within the US; this ability of interest groups is regarded as oversight power. Diverse Statemnt - Essay Example More so, vocabulary can be taught in different ways such as asking learners to state words beginning with given alphabetical letters, reading comprehension passages and identify new words and look up for their meanings from their context of use in relation to their dictionary meanings (Taber 13). In addition, grammar and spelling are other areas that should be adhered in teaching of English. Students with learning difficulties or special needs learners have to be accorded with special care and methodologies if educational objectives have to be achieved. These learners can be assisted through the provision of special and differentiated instructions, encouraging group or peer learning, repeating the taught content several times, encourage learners in the areas where they are good at and present them only relevant content and leave out less important content (Taber 9). These learners exhibit extra abilities as compared to the average learners. They are sometimes referred to as high achievers, talented or great thinkers. They are exhibited by their performance of task, high achievement in school, and are highly placed compared to the grade level learner. They are helped and taught using special methodologies, theories and procedures just like the slow learners since their pace of learning is not comparable to that of the average learners. There is an identified way of teaching these learners known as Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) or Talented and Gifted (TAG, or G/T). Learners are allowed to learn new things for themselves since they are able to digest new ideas and keep high level of motivation. They learn best through self-discovery and when experimental method of learning is applied (Taber
